National Self-Injury Awareness Day
March 1, 2002
How you can help raise awareness of self-injury
It's actually pretty easy to become part of NSIAD and help raise
awareness by providing accurate information about the nature of self-injury. You can even
remain anonymous if you like; it's up to you. A few ways to join in:
- Sign up here. Even better, sign up and
apply for a committee position.
- Pick out some hospitals, schools, crisis lines, and other places in your community
who would be good targets for information.
- Download the fact sheet, bill of rights, quotes, strategies for stopping,
press release, brochure, and other official NSIAD documents.
- Use the sample letter to mayors as a guideline to request the proclamation
of March 1st as Self-Injury Awareness Day in your town, surrounding communities, and your
state/province.
- Make photocopies of the materials.
- Put together a press kit for each local media outlet
you intend to contact.
- Put together a bundle of fact sheets and brochures for the institutions
you intend to contact.
- Either distribute the information on the 1st or snailmail it to arrive on
the 1st -- contact me if you want to do this anonymously.
- Plan events at your college or school if you can. Keep up with the SIAD bulletin board to trade ideas
and find people to hook up with.
- Locate your regional coordinator and keep him or her up to date with your plans.
- Before the end of November, NSIAD 2002 T-shirts and coffe mugs will be available at cafepress.
In years past, people have made business cards as well, using their printers.
